Stanley J. Sanders
in memoriam
Stanley J. Sanders founded The Sanders Law Firm in 1967. He practiced law for more than 50 years and left behind a legacy as a fierce victim’s advocate and dedicated philanthropist. Those who had the privilege to know him remember him as a special person and a great lawyer who believed in achieving justice for his clients even if it came at his own time and expense.
Mr. Sanders once said that, when somebody is seriously injured, their choice of attorney is often the most important decision they will ever make, because the quality of their representation can determine the rest of their life. He, and the firm that he built, have changed the lives of thousands of clients for the better by never backing down from powerful groups such as insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, the medical industry, and governments.
It takes strength to fight strength and building The Sanders Law Firm into one of New York’s largest and most successful personal injury law firms was his life’s work. The firm’s core values—constantly honing legal skills and knowledge, treating clients with courtesy and politeness, and using everything in their power to help injury victims—echo the values not only preached, but practiced day in and day out by Mr. Sanders.
Mr. Sanders graduated Brooklyn Law School in 1966 and became a New York State bar member in 1967. Over the next five decades, he built his solo practice into a force for those in need, representing thousands of claimants and collected hundreds of millions of dollars for them. He was a member of the Nassau County Bar Association, the New York State Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Trial Lawyers Association, with admissions to the Federal Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
Among his charitable activities, Mr. Sanders was the Executive Vice President and Fundraising Vice President for four years at the Shelter Rock Jewish Center, where he was also a member of the Board of Directors for many years and instrumental in the building of a nursery school at the synagogue. He was a long time Board Member of the Library Board of the Jewish Theological Seminary and underwrote a project to restore thousands of historically important texts that were damaged in a flood.
Mr. Sanders served as Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors of the Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center of Nassau County for many years. He was instrumental in the building of a new museum and the renovation of the building in which it is housed. He also represented World Trade Center victims for free.
Mr. Sanders passed away in 2018. His wife Phyllis continues to work at the firm that they built together as a Senior Partner. His son Douglas and daughter Meryl are also Senior Partners who honor their dad’s legacy and the firm’s history of helping people.
