Mismanaged Preeclampsia Claims

Preeclampsia, a condition that only occurs during pregnancy, is characterized by high blood pressure and high levels of protein in the urine. It most often occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy in women who have had normal blood pressure. It is estimated that approximately 5% of pregnant women in the U.S. develop preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is a serious and potentially fatal condition for mother and baby, making an immediate diagnosis of the utmost importance. It can be managed with medication for a time, giving the baby more time to mature, but the only true solution is to deliver the baby. As such, it will be necessary to weigh the risks of early delivery with the risks of continued preeclampsia symptoms.

There are three primary symptoms of preeclampsia:

  • High blood pressure
  • Swelling of the hands and feet
  • Protein in the urine

Regularly checking blood pressure and urine are two key parts of the medical care received during pregnancy. If your doctor failed to recognize high blood pressure, did not order your urine tested, or otherwise acted negligently in diagnosing or treating preeclampsia, and you or your child suffered harm as a result, the Long Island birth injury attorneys at The Sanders Firm are here to help you.
