Diet Pepsi, Pepsi One And Malta Goya Lawsuit

It is alleged that Pepsi’s “caramel coloring” contains too much 4-methylimidazole (4-Mel). This is concerning because according to a study by the National Toxicology Program, laboratory animals showed significant increases in cancerous lung tumors after exposure to the chemical.

By California law Proposition 65, Pepsi is required to label products containing more than 29 micrograms of 4-Mel per 12-ounce serving with a warning.

Consumer reports recently tested Pepsi products and found that the levels of 4-Mel in their soft drinks contained more than 29 micrograms. Pepsi’s response to this was that “consumers who drink diet sodas generally drink less than a third of a 12-ounce can per day, and therefore the soft drinks do not require cancer-risk warning labels.”
