Bronx Man Dies In Possible Case Of Emergency Room Malpractice

John Verrier died last month in a Bronx emergency room waiting area, where he sat eight hours, waiting on doctors to check out his rash, according to an article in the New York Daily News.

When patients are not treated properly, their loved ones may have the right to file a hospital malpractice lawsuit in New York City.

Potential case of emergency room malpractice in NY

As Verrier’s family mourns, they attempt to get answers as to why the 30-year-old amateur artist perished at Saint Barnabas Hospital. His family, who acknowledges Verrier struggled with drug addiction in the past, but was clean at the time of his death, believes he was a victim of emergency room malpractice.

A hospital employee, who was not identified, told ABC News that the hospital’s staff is too small to take care of its daily volume of patients. The employee claims hospital staff never checked on Verrier’s well-being, noting the hospital simply has too many patients to physically check on all of them.

The average emergency room wait at Saint Barnabas is twice as long as New York State and national averages, according to an article in the New York Post. The average emergency room wait to be treated and released across the state is 115 minutes. Nationally, the wait is 137 minutes. The ER wait at Saint Barnabas is 306 minutes.

The hospital claims no negligence

Hospital officials contend Verrier arrived at about 10 p.m. on Jan. 19, where he was registered by staff and told to wait for a doctor in the emergency room, according to an article in the New York Post. Instead, Verrier sat in the waiting room. Officials, who claim all hospital guidelines were fulfilled, say they called Verrier’s name at least two times between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., but he never answered. Hospital surveillance video shows Verrier walking around at 3:45 a.m. A hospital security guard found him dead about two hours later.
