The year 2014 has seen an unprecedented number of automobile recalls, injuries, and unnecessary deaths at the hands of poorly-designed vehicles and manufacturer negligence. If you are one of the thousands of victims impacted by the rampant defects across several manufacturers and models, we encourage you to immediately contact a product liability lawyer to initiate a discussion about you rights to possible compensation.

Following an auto accident, you may be able to recover for your actual medical expenses, lost wages, future earnings, and property damages. Moreover, successful plaintiffs are often able to recover for general damages including pain and suffering, emotional turmoil or mental anguish.

Recent auto recalls and identifiable defects

One of the most pressing auto recall issues plaguing our highways and byways involves the deadly ignition switch defect impacting several models of General Motors automobiles. Beginning in February, General Motors recalled 2.6 million vehicles after reports began to surface that the vehicle’s ignition switch could randomly shut off, causing the vehicle to shut down and the airbags to deactivate. So far, as many as 125 fatalities have been reported as linked to the GM ignition switch recall – and GM has settled with 19 surviving families so far.

Earlier this year, Fiat Chrysler recalled 25,000 2014-2015 Fiat 500L models following issues that surfaced with the innovative knee airbags installed in the vehicles to protect drivers’ legs in the event of a front-end collision. More specifically, Fiat confirms that its recall is the result of potentially faulty and defective airbag folding procedures at the Serbia-based plant could cause problems in the event of a crash.

The Ford Motor Company is experiencing similar strife with regard to its Fiesta compact model vehicle. According to reports, Ford Fiesta models manufactured between 2011 and 2013 are supposedly apt to problems regarding the door latch – resulting in the sudden opening of the drivers’ side door with the vehicle is in motion. The recall affects over 200,000 cars and is the result of over 60 complaints of door malfunction.

Lastly, airbag manufacturer Takata is facing possible exposure to liability due to faulty airbag installations in 11 various automakers and a staggering 14 million vehicles. In Honda vehicles alone, two deaths and over 30 serious injuries have been reported as a result of defective Takata airbags. Reportedly, the airbags either partially deflated, or spewed shrapnel at drivers and passengers in the event of collision – including one unthinkable instance where a driver was fatally impaled by shrapnel in her neck and chest, bleeding to death in front of her family.
