School Bus Overturns Injuring 11 In Hudson Valley

Bus

A series of unfortunate events in Poughkeepsie led to a school bus crash that injured eleven people, including nine students. The bus was on its normal route in the tiny town of Arlington, when a vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines, smashing into it. The force of the impact caused the bus to flip over on its side, say authorities. The driver and students were able to crawl out of the overturned bus through a roof hatch, after which injured passengers were transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital.

All students were listed in “good condition,” though the 21-year old driver of the vehicle did not fare as well. Fire officials say that the woman had to be extricated from her car, and suffered serious injuries.  The bus accident resulted after the young woman smashed into a minivan on Spackenkill Road, which was temporarily stopped as the driver attempted to turn left onto Cedar Valley Road. After hitting the minivan, the vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane, where it collided with the school bus.

Arlington Fire Captain Bill Steenbergh told NBC New York that all things considered, the accident and resulting injuries could have been much worse. “Buses are built incredibly strong to begin with. They do that for a reason obviously, but this was certainly a near-miss.”
